Academics

At Hurlyvale Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to succeed. That’s why we value academic excellence and provide skills in areas such as arts, culture, and technology.

Your Childs Learning Environment

We believe that each subject is important, and we strive to ensure that our learners receive the best possible education in each area. We have a team of dedicated teachers who are passionate about education and work tirelessly to create a learning environment that is engaging, challenging, and fun.

The Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), which is designed to provide a holistic education and develop critical thinking skills in our learners. We believe that a well-rounded education is key to unlocking each child’s potential and preparing them for the future.

The Foundation Phase caters for boys and girls in Grades 1, 2 and 3. There are 4 classes in each Grade. Academics in this phase includes the 4 learning areas, namely:

At Hurlyvale Primary School, our Leadership policy is taken from the State’s policy of co-operative governance. Learners have the opportunity to develop leadership abilities in a myriad of ways.

In Grade 6, learners have the opportunity to serve as Monitors in a variety of portfolios with an emphasis on service.

All Grade 7 learners have the opportunity to apply to be a school Leader, with a strong focus on developing leadership skills. These roleswill rotate each term, ensuring that all applicants gain hands-on leadership experience and receive appropriate training. Leadership training for all applicants will begin at the end of Grade 6.

At Hurlyvale Primary, we are committed to supporting children who are neurodiverse; that is, children who have different learning styles and needs. We have a dedicated IEP Centre that includes a class for each of the Foundation Phase grades (1-3). IEP, Inclusive Education Programme, aims to provide support to learners who are not meeting their full potential and may require interventions to overcome barriers to learning. These classes support identified learners by providing a smaller environment of approximately 15 children.

This is a space where they will continue to follow the curriculum while receiving additional support through learning skills and strategies which aim to equip them to reach their full potential. Our newly renovated centre is child-focused and is equipped with a variety of different teaching and learning resources, including a sensory room where learners can go to self-regulate. Through careful screening, learners are identified, selected and then invited to join our IEP Programme.

Hurlyvale Primary is proud to be at the forefront of educational innovation by integrating Coding and Robotics into our academic curriculum, preparing students for the 21st-century economy. Recognising the growing demand, this subject aligns with the Gauteng Department of Education’s move to make it a future requirement. Our comprehensive curriculum goes beyond basic coding by teaching digital citizenship, practical Google Workspace application skills, and robotics using LEGO SPIKE kits. This rigorous approach is designed to cultivate essential critical thinking and problem-solving skills in every learner. As part of this commitment, we are also developing a dedicated STEM Centre, ensuring that your child receives a cutting-edge education that places Hurlyvale Primary at the leading edge of foundational technology skills.
