Our Mission
Hurlyvale Primary School is committed to affording the opportunity and guiding each learner to take responsibility and ownership of developing their own life and leadership skills, unique talents and personality to the best of their academic, cultural, social, artistic, sporting or practical ability.
Hurlyvale Primary School embraces a well-balanced and relevant educational programme that enhances the intellectual, physical, social and moral upbringing of its learners, with a strong emphasis on the value and importance of the good image that our school portrays and the positive influence that this has in laying a solid foundation for their futures.
Hurlyvale Primary School’s ongoing attention is focused on the continuous development of an improved curriculum and a relationship that enables our educators, parents, and learners to create a nurturing environment and collaborate in a partnership that facilitates learners to preserve their own identity with pride while respecting the professional rights of their educators and the individual rights and cultures of their educators, staff, fellow learners and families.
Our Vision
Hurlyvale Primary School strives to provide a balanced educational programme, characterised by the highest possible standards within a safe, happy, supportive, disciplined, moral and stimulating educational environment that is conducive to the realisation of each and every learner’s potential of developing into responsible citizens of society.
Hurlyvale Primary School advocates an ethos of “We Are Family” that promotes a strong sense of community, caring and belonging among educators, staff, learners, parents and all families of our school.
Our History
Hurlyvale Primary School is situated in the Edenvale suburb of Hurlyvale, which derives its name from the Hurly family who owned the dairy farm on which the suburb was first laid out. Charlie Hurly was a Springbok soccer player who represented South Africa in 1954 and 1956 as a full-back.
Building operations commenced in 1974. On 21 November 1974, Mr J.K. Kilmister received confirmation that he had been appointed Acting Headmaster of the new Hurlyvale Primary School. A meeting was called at Dunvegan Primary School in December 1974, where prospective parents were informed of developments regarding the school.
On 8 January 1975, when the school opened its doors to 292 learners, it consisted of the administration block and the junior wing, comprising eight classrooms – the hall and three-storey senior wing were still under construction. As nine junior primary classes were required, the staff room was also used as a classroom.
In September 1975, the learners were divided into three houses, namely: Acrux (blue), Scorpio (Red) and Orion (green). However, due to a dramatic increase in learner enrolment, four houses were created in April 1976, just prior to the first inter-house athletics meeting. The houses were then named after birds: Finch, Kingfisher, Robin and Swallow.
Mr J.W. Nowlan was appointed as the first headmaster of Hurlyvale Primary School and took up office in January 1976. It was at this time that the school building was finally completed and handed over for occupation. On 7 January 1976, 743 learners arrived, more than twice the previous year’s enrolment. The majority of these learners transferred from Dunvegan, Bedfordview and Eastleigh Primary Schools.
On Thursday, 7 October 1976, Prof. J.H. Jooste, Director of Education, officially opened the school.
Mr J.W. Nowlan served the school as Headmaster until he was appointed Vice-Rector at the Pretoria College of Education in September 1980. He was succeeded in January 1981 by Mr J.P. Brownlie, whose term of office ended abruptly with his untimely death on 20 October 1990. The late Mr Brownlie was succeeded in July 1991 by Mr G.Ward. Mr T.H. Thom was the Principal from 2001 to 2020. Mrs D.Schoultz is the current Principal and was appointed in 2021.
Hurlyvale Primary School celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2015 and has established a proud reputation for itself. We trust that the parents, educators and learners presently associated with our school will assist in perpetuating our proud traditions.
Class Dojo
Ed-Admin
Karri App
Our Trusted Partners
We use three main digital tools to keep parents connected and informed: ClassDojo, Ed-Admin Multiportal App, and Karri App. ClassDojo facilitates direct communication from Foundation Phase teachers to parents about classroom activities and student updates. The Ed-Admin Multiportal App serves as our primary platform for all official school-to-parent communication, including notifications, news, and student academic information like reports. For all school-related payments, such as tuck shop orders, fundraising events, and civvies days, we utilise the Karri App.
The aftercare centre should be contacted directly for all applications. We aim to provide a safe and well-supervised aftercare facility.

Fundraising at Hurlyvale is managed by a group of committed volunteer parents. Whilst school fees pay for the general running of the school, funds raised by this committee are used to upgrade and improve our school for the benefit of the learners. This team meets on a regular basis.
If you would like to be part of our fundraising initiatives, please email mail@hvps.net.
We have a qualified Therapy Team who is available at our school during school hours!
The Team Consists of:
Educators will refer parents of learners who need support to the appropriate therapy.
Parents are not obligated to use the therapists at the school – these are privately contracted therapists that travel to the school to make it more convenient for our parents and children.
The Tuck Inn is open at first and second-break
